CPR Derby – 9/23/2012

In this season’s Women’s Derby this past Sunday, the Whites suffered a tough 0-2 defeat to the club rivals, the Reds.  A beautiful day for soccer, Sunday was a heartbreaking loss for the Whites, 0-1-2 so far this season.  The Whites rejected the Reds’ advances for 40+ minutes until, in the closing minutes of the first half, the Reds capitalized on a turnover at the halfway line.  Making a quick transition, the opponent’s forward, Jill, netted a far-post shot from 20 yards out.  In our defense, she is really, really fast.  The Whites held the 0-1 score for the majority of the second half, battling back but unable to finish their chances.  Kelly Sanders’s 25 yard free kick beat the Reds’ wall and was the best on goal shot from the Whites, but was unable to get past the keeper.  In the last minutes of the second half, Reds’ newcomer Paddy attacked out of the back and laced a shot from way outside to make the score 0-2.  Again, in our defense, she just graduated college.  The Whites were unable to return the favor in the closing minutes of the game, receiving a disappointing L after 90 minutes.
When reached for comment, Kaitlin Dufton responded brusquely yet not impolitely, “grrr :) ”.  The inclusion of a smiley face with the frustration sums up this showing well; despite the final score, the Whites showed important improvements.  Building on the usual tough defending, with Cat Verri continuing to fill Gump’s shoes at center back, the offense was finally clicking and creating our best chances this season.  The Whites look to improve their record this Sunday at 11:00AM at the East 6th field against Scala, because we have to and because it is about time us forwards score.
