The winter of 2026 pummeled New York with feet of snow relentlessly through January and February. Outdoor training and winter matches were canceled week after week. Despite the weather’s seemingly endless effort to keep our players from touching the ball, CPR Red Army still gathered together to play. Less than a week following a historic blizzard, they boarded a plane and traveled to a more temperate climate to compete in a national tournament.
Savannah, Georgia was where our players found themselves for the Beer City Cup, ready to take on a new challenge and enjoy the upper-sixty degree weather. Their first clash took place on the morning of February 28 against Speedy Turtles. With an assist by Sara Rodriguez, Stephanie Gonzalez drove the ball into the back of the net, putting Red Army up 1-0 at halftime. Red Army held strong through the rest of the game and finished with a solid 1-0 win for their first game of the tournament.
With their spirits vitalized, Red Army took to their afternoon match against One Knox with heightened energy. They kept a clean sheet and secured an impressive 3-0 win over their opponents. With an unbeaten first tournament day, Red Army earned their way straight to the semifinals.
The semifinal match on Sunday against Washington DC FC was full of excitement and energy, with Red Army as the consistently dominant team throughout the match. However, their opponent was formidable and able to hold off CPR’s attacks through the first and second half of the match. With seconds to go in the match, hearts broke across New York as Washington DC FC found a goal, securing their spot in the finals.
Although Red Army was unable to bring home the trophy, the team grew stronger in their teamwork, camaraderie, team dinners, and treating of torn achilles. As they flew back home, one thing was certain: they were hungrier than ever for trophies this season, on or off home turf.
